What is a carrier oil?

Carrier oils are often referred to as base oils or fixed oils and are normally cold pressed vegetable oils which are derived from the fatty portions of a plant (be it the seed, nut or plant itself). Most carrier oils are scent-free, so will not impart any fragrance to your final product, however some do have a slight natural fragrance.

Most oils that are bought in the supermarket are not cold pressed. Instead, these oils have been heat treated and as a result have less of a therapeutic benefit.

Carrier oils contain vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Many of them also soften and improve skin condition. Some carrier oils are also highly effective in treating irritated, sensitive conditions, such as eczema, while others will help to reduce wrinkles and scar tissue.

Carrier oils are largely derived from nuts and seeds, although there are a few exceptions to this, such as coconut oil which is extracted from the flesh of the coconut, there is also jojoba oil which actually comes from a shrub.
